Design and execution of the video-scenography for the absolute Spanish premiere of "Tootsie, the Musical Sitcom". A major production by Triple F and Talycual that landed at the Teatro Apolo in Barcelona in October 2025. The visual work was key to transporting the audience from the actors' Upper West Side apartments to the glamorous Broadway recording studios, while keeping the dynamism proper to a sitcom.
The Challenge: The Agility of Comedy
Unlike other, more contemplative musicals, Tootsie demands dizzying speed in its scene changes. The video was designed to work in total symbiosis with the physical set design, functioning as one more gear in the "Swiss watch" that this production is.
- Digital Architecture: Creation of dynamic backdrops recreating the depth of Manhattan's streets and the apartment windows, adding context and bringing a cinematic scale to the Apolo stage.
- Narrative Integration: The video helps underscore the protagonist's double role (Michael Dorsey / Dorothy Michaels), matching the character's rapid transformations with instant changes of environment.
- Colorist Aesthetic: Following the line set by Pablo Battaglia's costume design and José Manuel Guerra's lighting, the video-scenography uses a vibrant, saturated palette that reinforces the show's upbeat, comedic tone.
Development and Technology
The technical implementation focused on visual clarity and synchrony:
Invisible Transitions: Video content flows in step with the moving elements of the set, creating a sense of uninterrupted spatial continuity.
Atmospheric Environments: Use of subtle light and motion textures (city lights, traffic, studio ambience) to bring the backdrops to life and avoid a static image.
Impact on the Production
The video-scenography design for Tootsie has been essential in elevating the production value, immersing the audience in the energy of New York. The result is a visual experience that is modern, agile, and technically flawless.
"In Tootsie, video is the ally that keeps the magic of musical theater from stopping for even a second, transforming the space at the same speed the protagonist changes identity."
